Humbugardy: 6th Degree Quotes for 400
2005-10-25 10:07
by Score Bard

This is round 2 of Humbugardy. I'm your host, Alex Scorebard.

He was the first umpire to ever call out on strikes
the father of
the only player to steal a base off of
the catcher who was born in the same town as
the poet who wrote,
"What a filthy Presidentiad!"

Just in case . . . Who was Ken Burkhart?

More resulting trivia: though Retrosheet doesn't account for the St. Louis pitcher in the top of the sixth, the game in question appears to be a 5 1/2-inning rain shortened game that Sam Jones started and lost for the Giants in St. Louis. That's fun because the previous year, on 9/26, Jones threw seven no-hit innings for the Giants against the Cards in another rain-shortened game (Retrosheet does not have a box score for that one). The rain thus robbing Jones of what would have been his second major league no-no.

Speaking of which 2005 was the first season since 2000 and just the second since 1989 that did not include a single no-hitter.

Hell, since I do not know how Retrosheet allocates umps, may go for the gusto just in case.

Who is Augie Donatelli?

Worth a shot . . .

What was it, 1990 when there were all those no-hitters thrown? Maybe it was time to pay up this year - or maybe we'll see a huge number in '06. Nice trivia, Cliff.

Not baseball trivia exactly, but its amazing how many different results you get by googling the name of the player (in quotes) + each of these umpire's names (in quotes) + 1960 - I don't think any give the question, but there were some interesting non-related tidbits in the results.

Can someone explain? I got lost when I used "Gus Sandberg" as the catcher.

Score Bard: Let's finish Anagram Lines.

Rorschach: I do check this site pretty frequently, but I think this is the first time that I've been the first one submit an answer.

misterjohnny: The catcher is Mark Strittmatter (Huntington, NY) not Sandberg (Long Island City). The only stolen base off him was Stan Javier (9/25/98), son of Julian, who struck out in his second game (5/29/60).

Let's just take this opportunity to imagine trying to complete this task without the Internet! If this doesn't show how great Google, Retrosheet and the internet (as a whole) is, I don't know what does!!

Amen, Joe. But don't forget Baseball-Reference in that list.
