by Score Bard

Here we have Mystery Photo Number Twelve. Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to help figure out the who/when/where of the photo.

Thanks to all who have sent in photos. I have enough to keep us going another few weeks. Nonetheless, please send in more. If you have any old (non-copyrighted) MLB photos that might suit this game, please email them to mystery At humbug .com.

Orioles, obviously. Jeff Fiorentino catching the ball, and Tejada and Newhan looking on. There seem to be extraneous markings near where Tejada is standing, and the grass looks fairly beat up, so I'd guess this photo is from a game in Oakland during football season.

Are the Orioles playing at Oakland? Those look like football lines on the field.

There were some caching issues, Travis.

Could be September 1 or 2 of this year.
I'd guess a night game, because of the long shadows coming from the LF foul line.
So 9/1, bottom of 2nd, "F. Thomas flied out to left center" maybe?

Those lines are too close together to be yard lines. Are they side lines?

Good catch, Travis & Bob! I'm pretty sure that September 1 & 2 of this year are the only two games in which Fiorentino played left & Newhan played center (which appears to be the case here).

In which case, it's probably either Swisher flying out in the 4th inning on the 2nd or Thomas flying out in the 2nd inning on the 1st (there are also pop outs to center on each day, but I assume that the center fielder caught them, then). I'm going with the latter, as the out is coded as a flyout to left-center, and the shadows lead me to believe that the game is at night (the game on 9/2 was at 1 pm Pacific).

Sorry - For the Turnstiles, I didn't see your post until now.

So it's September 1, 2006. Baltimore at Oakland. Bottom of the 2nd, no outs, 2-2 count. On a 2-2 pitch from Erik Bedard, Frank Thomas flies out to left fielder Jeff Fiorentino as center fielder David Newhan and shortstop Miguel Tejada look on.

The score was 1-0 Baltimore at the time, but Oakland would score their first run in a 5-4 win later in that half-inning.

Those are the sidelines, you can see the hash marks under Tejada's feet.
