Chase Utley, who led the majors in being hit by pitches last year (25) despite missing a month .... as a result of one of those HBPs, has tied a Major League record this afternoon.

Utley got plunked, to paraphrase Monty Burns in the "Homer at the Bat" episode, "not once, not twice, but thrice" by the Mets in the Phils 5-2 win.

Here are the prior instances of a batter being hit three times in the same game (from 1956 to present).

Utley was also hit by a thrown ball on the basepaths, leading directly to 2 runs being scored and the turning point of the game.

As a Met fan, I think they should start aiming at Utley's face or privates cuz these glancing body blows aren't getting it done. When they let him swing away, it's only worse.

How does Nomar get hit three times and not immediately end up on the DL? (Although that date does closely coincide with his offensive tailspin that season, and into the next....)
